…the British Journal of Cancer evaluated the association between nut consumption and the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in a high-risk population. A total of 50,045 participants from The Golestan Cohort Study took part in the study.
The intake of peanuts, walnuts and mixed nuts and seeds was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Non-consumers of nuts were compared with participants who consumed nuts and results showed a statistically significant 29% decrease in ESCC risk for each 5 g of total nuts consumed per day.
In conclusion, researchers found an inverse association between total nut consumption and the risk of ESCC in this large Iranian cohort.
