In the EU, high COVID-19 transmission rates have been reported in most countries. Several countries, such as Italy, Germany and Belgium, have imposed strict containment measures in an attempt to curb increasing infections. On March 26, the EU4Health initiative was approved by the European Commission. The program will make available funds up to €5.1 billion to increase the resilience of health systems and promote innovation in the health sector. According to a press release published by the Commission, the funding will contribute to the post-COVID-19 recovery, as well as supporting the fight against cross-border health threats and boosting the EU's preparedness and capability to respond effectively to future health crisis.

In the US, coronavirus cases are also increasing, however less steeply. Around 143 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered, according to data recently published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To date, more than 52 million Americans have been fully vaccinated.
