On 21 October 2016, INC attended the EU-Turkey Cooperation Scheme on Hazelnuts Annual Consultations, represented by Dr. Ana Bermejo, INC Food Safety and Law Specialist. Organized by the Agro-food Cooperatives of Spain and the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Catalonia (FCAC), the aim of the meeting was to address the situation in the hazelnut market.The meeting brought together Turkish and EU producers, cooperatives, traders, processors and national associations, as well as representatives of the Turkish’s government (the world’s largest producer) and the European Commission (DG Agri). A total of 46 participants from 5 different countries attended the meeting in Reus, Spain.EC DG-Agri International Relations Officer, Mr. Christian Frigaard Rasmussen, and representatives from Turkey, Spain, Italy and France reviewed the 2015/16 campaign including production, prices, imports and exports, end-of-season stocks and consumption. In addition, they discussed about crop forecasts and price expectation for the 2016/17 campaign.Other topics such as administrative arrangements in the hazelnuts sector, developments in EU common market organization, and aflatoxin controls on hazelnuts from Turkey were also discussed.The meeting concluded with a technical visit to a hazelnut experimental plantation.It is expected that the next meeting will be held in Turkey next year.
