The European Commission has launched a public call on a new draft Regulation that will establish specific import conditions for food products of non-animal origin due to microbiological contamination.The Draft proposes that imported products of non-animal origin included into the Annex I must be:
- Introduced into the Union through the designated point of entry (“DPE”).
- Accompanied by the common entry document (CED), the results of sampling and analysis verifying the absence of the hazard specified in Annex I, a health certificate (model in the Annex III).
- Identified with an identification code (consignment code).
- Subject to increased official controls (identity and physical checks) at EU borders at frequency established in Annex II.
The products included in the draft are sesame seeds and betel leaves from India due to the potential risks of contamination with Salmonella. According to the European Federation of the Trade in Dried Fruit & Edible Nuts, Processed Fruit & Vegetables, Processed Fishery products, Spices, Honey (FRUCOM), it is expected that the list of products will be subject to regular revision and other products might be added.More information
