Most countries throughout the world have developed nutrition guidelines in order to promote proper nutrition inside their borders. Although normally these guidelines include recommendations on dietary fat intake, these vary from country to country. Fat intake guidelines are usually affected by the level of affluence or poverty existing in the country and consequently sometimes these have to be adapted to both cases. On the other hand, dietary fat guidelines in some countries are directly related to local culture and traditions. As a result of the growing rate of heart diseases, obesity, diabetes Type 2, and other health problems, most countries have understood the need for developing nutrition guidelines to orient consumers on their food choices and the adoption of suitable dietary behaviors, in an attempt to control the increase of the above mentioned diseases. Since diseases are the same, regardless of the country, recommendations aimed at prevention are similar and many countries have comparable nutrition guidelines. The key message that these guidelines convey is the need for reaching a balance between calorie intake and exercise and selecting more nutritional foods.
