INC attended the Third Meeting of the Spanish Almond Industry, held in Gergal, Almería, Spain, on April 20, 2017. Around 60 participants from the Spanish almond industry (growers, traders, processors, manufacturers, organizations, and machinery companies) attended the meeting.The event was organized by the Spanish Almond Board (SAB-Almendrave) with the objective of sharing and discussing updates and views on the challenges and opportunities of the Spanish almond industry. The event offered three round tables with experts from the almond sector and covered topics such as production, new almond varieties, new developments in processing technologies, profitability of the almond crops in Spain, organic certification, the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the potential impact of the Brexit.The first round table, moderated by Mr. Pascual López Cremades (Secretary of the Spanish Almond Board), revolved around the almond crop production in the last season and the forecast for the coming season. This table was composed by Ms. Dariela Roffe-Rackind (Director, Europe & Global Public Relations, Almond Board of California), Mr. Miguel Borrás (Aeofruse Coordinator), Mr. José Luis Balanzá (Descalmendra Coordinator) and D. José Manuel Martinez (General Director of Almendras de Almería).During the second round table, different innovations in the almond sector were presented. Mr. Carlos Bermudez (MASETO) explained the latest developments in machinery and technology highlighting the importance of big data, energy efficiency and food safety. The new scientific advances in plant breading and new almond varieties were presented by Mr. Federico Dicenta (CEBAS-CSIC). Ms. Isabel María Usero (ALMERIPLANT) remarked the importance of using plants of quality (free of diseases) to obtain high quality almonds. The last speaker, Mr. Andrés J. Nieves (AMYNDALA) explained different agronomic techniques aimed at improving the quality of the almond production. The round table was moderated by Mr. Joan Fortuny (Vice chairman of SAB).During the last round table, economic and political aspects were discussed. Mr. Ramón Gil (Cajamar-Caja Rural) presented the estimation of the profitability of different models of almond cultivations (non-irrigated, irrigated, and super-intensive). He remarked that Spain leads the world almond-growing area but the yields are still lower than in USA and Australia. Afterwards, Mr. Tomás García-Azcárate (Spanish National Research Council-CSIC) spoke about potential consequences of the Brexit and the future of the Common Agricultural Policy. Lastly, Mr. José Angel Navarro (CAAE de Almería) gave a presentation about the certification of the organic almond and presented the most important private certifications such as Global Gap, BRC and IFS.
