The INC has published the latest edition of the Nut and Dried Fruit Trade Map series, one of its most eagerly anticipated statistical reports.
The series features six maps illustrating the main trade flows for nuts and dried fruits, showing the routes between leading origins and destinations and the corresponding traded volumes. This publication serves as a valuable reference for the industry and below is a selection of key insights drawn from each map.
- World Tree Nut Trade Flows (shelled): Global shelled tree nut trade totaled 3.15 million metric tons (January-December 2024). Almonds represented the largest share of international shipments at 37%, followed by cashews at 26%, and walnuts and hazelnuts at 14% each. The principal exporting origins were the USA, Viet Nam, Türkiye, Spain, and China, while the main importing markets were the EU+EFTA countries plus the UK, followed by the USA, Türkiye, and China. Some relevant shifts observed since the last edition of these series, two years ago: Viet Nam, Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire markedly raised exports of shelled cashews. Although still dominated by Türkiye, shipments of shelled hazelnuts from Chile and the USA have shown noticeable growth, particularly to the EU+EFTA+UK. Shelled pistachio shipments from the USA recorded a sharp rise. China considerably expanded exports of shelled walnuts.
- World Tree Nut Trade Flows (in-shell): Worldwide in-shell tree nut trade exceeded 4.76 M MT. In-shell cashews (raw cashew nuts) dominated global volumes, accounting for 62% of the total, followed by in-shell walnuts and pistachios at 11% each, and almonds at 10%. Asia remains the leading importing region, driven largely by Viet Nam and India’s demand for RCN. Key exporting origins include Western Africa, the USA, Eastern Africa, and Cambodia. Main shifts since the last edition include a substantial rise in pistachio shipments. The USA recorded a significant increase, with exports to China and Viet Nam doubling. Iran also expanded its pistachio exports. In addition, China emerged as a notable supplier of in-shell walnuts to a wide range of markets.
- Intra-European Tree Nut Trade Flows (shelled + in-shell): Intra-European tree nut trade accounted for 598,300 MT, with shelled products representing 76% of the total. The main exporting and re-exporting hubs were Spain (26%), the Netherlands (21%), and Germany (17%).
- World Peanut Trade Flows (shelled + in-shell): Peanut trade totaled 3.60 M MT, with shelled products accounting for 91% of global shipments. India was the leading exporter with 26% of the total, followed by Argentina (17%), the USA (16%), and Sudan (10%). The largest importing market was the EU+EFTA+UK bloc with 32% of global intake, followed by China at 21%.
- World Dried Fruit Trade Flows: Global dried fruit trade amounted to 3.60 M MT, with dates representing 52% of total exports and dried grapes 25%. Prunes accounted for 8%, while dried figs and cranberries each held 6%, and dried apricots 4%. Western Asia remained the leading exporting region, and the EU+EFTA+UK bloc continued as the main destination with 29% of imports, followed by India at 17%. Compared with the previous edition, dried grape shipments rose notably from South Africa, China, and India. Prune exports from Chile also increased, driven in particular by higher volumes destined for China.
- Intra-European Dried Fruit Trade Flows: European dried fruit trade amounts to approximately 287,800 MT, with the Netherlands as the leading exporter and re-exporter at 25%, followed by France at 15% and Germany at 14%.
