The 10th Asian Nutrition Congress was held in Taipei, Taiwan, 9-13 September, 2007, under the theme “Diet, Nutrition and Optimal Health: From Food Supply to Nutrigenomics”. The INC and INC-NREF sponsored the session “Health Benefits of Tree Nuts”, held on September 11.

For the first time nuts were highlighted to Asian health influencers and policy makers. Six speakers highlighted the major outcomes from the 2007 Nuts & Health Symposium:

  • Tree Nuts and Health: An Introduction and Overview. Ning-Sing Shaw, PhD, National Taiwan University, Taiwan, and Maureen Ternus, MS, RD, INC-NREF, USA.
  • Epidemiological Research on Nuts and Cardiovascular Disease. Frank Hu, MD, PhD, Harvard School of Public Health, USA.
  • Phytonutrient Composition of Nuts. Jeff Blumberg, PhD, FACN, CNS, Tufts University, Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, USA.
  • The Effects of Tree Nuts on Inflammation, Body Weight and Insulin Resistance. Prof. Jordi Salas Salvadó, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Spain.
  • The Energetics of Nut Consumption. Richard Mattes, MPH, PhD, RD, Purdue University, USA.
  • Effect of Almond Supplementation on Anthropometric Measurements and Selected Biochemical Parameters in Adult Subjects with Metabolic Syndrome. Gomathy Shivaji, MSc, MPhil, PhD, RD, Women’s Christian College, India.
In addition, a dinner that same evening was held with the session speakers and other health professionals including: Drs. Sung He Cho and Myung-Hee Kang, both with the Korean Nutrition Society (Presidentelect and Vice President respectively); Dr. Jaw-Wen Chen, President of the Taiwan Society of Lipids and Atherosclerosis; Dr. Ning-Sing Shaw from Taiwan National University and former President of the Taiwan Nutrition Society; and Dr. Jen Fang Liu with the Taipei Medical University.

Both the session and dinner were a great opportunity to interact with health professionals. Currently most of the food pyramids or graphics in Asia lump nuts in the “fats/eat seldom” category so this session represented a chance to showcase the more positive position nuts hold in the USDA MyPyramid and dietary guidelines.
