The European Commission (EC) notified the World Trade Organization of the Draft Commission Regulation as regards the removal of calcium sorbate (E 203). Due to the impossibility of assessing the risk posed by the use of calcium sorbate as a food additive to human health, the inclusion of this substance in the Union list of authorized food additives can no longer be justified. On June 30, 2015, the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) delivered a Scientific Opinion concluding that there was a lack of genotoxicity data on calcium sorbate. On June 10, 2016, the EC launched a public call for genotoxicity data on calcium sorbate but no business operator expressed interest in providing the requested data. Since without new data EFSA cannot assess the safety of the calcium sorbate, EC considered appropriate to remove calcium sorbate from the list of approved food additives. The final date for comments is May 5, 2017. The date of adoption is foreseen for September 2017.For further information, please contact us at inc@nutfruit.org.
