Research Funded Since 2013

Backed by an investment of over €2 million, the INC has launched a scientific roadmap to advance a health claim for nuts, driven by two flagship initiatives: the NUTPOOL Project and the PreNut Clinical Trial, marking a clear pathway from scientific evidence to global recognition:

A Roapmap to a Health Claim for Nuts

Nuts are widely recognized as nutritious foods, with a growing body of research linking regular consumption to positive health outcomes. However, there is currently no category-wide health claim for nuts. For the INC, this represents an important opportunity to strengthen the scientific evidence base and support greater recognition of nuts within dietary guidance and public health policy.

Building the Evidence: NUTPOOL

Launched in 2024 and running through July 2027, NUTPOOL is a global meta-analysis bringing together data from more than one million participants worldwide. The project aims to consolidate existing evidence on nut consumption and health, creating a stronger scientific foundation for future health claim applications.

Generating New Clinical Proof: PRENUT

The PRENUT Clinical Trial is scheduled to begin in January 2027. This five-year, multi-centre study across the USA, India, Spain, and Canada will evaluate the impact of daily mixed nut consumption in individuals at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

By generating new clinical evidence, PRENUT aims to strengthen understanding of how nuts may contribute to healthy dietary patterns and support long-term health outcomes.

From Research to Recognition

Together, NUTPOOL and PRENUT form part of the INC’s long-term roadmap to consolidate global evidence, generate new clinical research, and support future opportunities for health claims, dietary guidelines, and wider recognition of the health benefits of nuts.

Global Health Claim on Nuts

The INC is taking a major step toward gaining a global health claim for nuts with the NUTPOOL Study. This groundbreaking research will collect data from 1 million participants and be the first of its kind to use a meta-analysis of various large-scale studies globally, to comprehensively investigate the association between nut consumption, chronic diseases and mortality.

Funded Projects on Nuts & Dried Fruits

Through strategic funding, significant investments have been directed toward research that highlights the benefits of nuts and dried fruits. Grants have also been awarded to support promotional and educational initiatives, while nutrition symposia in multiple countries have helped raise awareness and share knowledge with experts and consumers worldwide.
