A recent study published in Nutrients investigated the effect of walnuts on mood in a population of healthy young volunteers. Sixty-four subjects were randomly assigned to one of the two study groups: walnuts-placebo and placebo-walnuts. Participants were asked to consume three slices of banana bread every day for sixteen weeks (eight weeks banana bread with walnuts and eight weeks banana bread without walnuts). The mood of the students was tested at baseline and at the end of each of the two eight-week treatment periods. The Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire was used to estimate the intensity of mood disturbance in the participants. In non-depressed healthy young males, regular walnut consumption seems to have the ability to improve mood.In conclusion, in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled feeding trial, supplementation with walnuts was able to improve mood in healthy, non-depressed males. No effect on mood was observed in females.
