The European Commission has opened a public consultation on the role of bio-based plastics in packaging, which will run until January 13, 2027. The consultation is part of the review under Article 8 of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). It will help the Commission assess possible demand-side measures and targets to increase the use of bio-based feedstock in plastic packaging, which could be linked with possible sustainability requirements for bio-based feedstock. Based on the results, the Commission may propose legislation. Food-contact packaging businesses, brand owners and retailers are among the stakeholders invited to take part.
In parallel, European Commissioner Jessika Roswall launched the Bio-based Europe Alliance at the Global Bioeconomy Summit in Dublin. The voluntary initiative brings together buyers and suppliers of bio-based materials, and more than 100 stakeholders have already joined.
