Benefits of Nut Consumption on Insulin Resistance and Cardiovascular Risk Factors: Multiple Potential Mechanisms of Actions. Nutrients.

Epidemiological and clinical studies have indicated that nut consumption could be a healthy dietary strategy to prevent and treat type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and related cardiovascular disease (CVD). The objective of this review is to examine the potential mechanisms of action of nuts addressing effects on glycemic control, weight management, energy balance, appetite, gut microbiota […]

Nut Consumption and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease.

BACKGROUND: The associations between specific types of nuts, specifically peanuts and walnuts, and cardiovascular disease remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to analyze the associations between the intake of total and specific types of nuts and cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, and stroke risk. METHODS: The authors included 76,364 women from the Nurses’ Health Study […]

Associations between Nut Consumption and Health Vary between Omnivores, Vegetarians, and Vegans.

Abstract: Regular nut consumption is associated with reduced risk factors for chronic disease; however, most population-based studies lack consideration of effect modification by dietary pattern. The UK Women’s Cohort Study (UKWCS) provides an ideal opportunity to examine relationships between nut consumption and chronic disease risk factors in a large sample with diverse dietary patterns. Nut […]

A Mediterranean diet with additional extra virgin olive oil and pistachios reduces the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM): A randomized controlled trial: The St. Carlos GDM prevention study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) prevalence is increasing and becoming a major public health concern. Whether a Mediterranean diet can help prevent GDM in unselected pregnant women has yet to be studied. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, randomized controlled trial to evaluate the incidence of GDM with two different dietary models. All consecutive normoglycemic (<92 […]

Mediterranean Diet and Pistachios May Reduce Incidence of Gestational Diabetes

This study evaluated the incidence of Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in pregnant women following a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and pistachios. The study was published recently in PLoS One journal and observed that the incidence of GDM may be reduced with an early nutritional intervention based on the supplementation of the Mediterranean diet with an increased consumption of EVOO and pistachios.

Nut Consumption and Cardiovascular Health, New Study from Harvard

The study analyzed the associations between the intake of total and specific types of nuts and cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease (CHD), and stroke risk. The study, which is the largest to date looking at the frequency of nut consumption and CVD, has been published recently in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
