This Strategy aims to address the challenges of producing and consuming food in a sustainable way, and reconcile what people eat with the needs of the planet. In addition, it will reduce the environmental and climate footprint and it will ensure food security, nutrition and public health, making sure that everyone has access to sufficient, safe, nutritious, sustainable food.

Current food consumption patterns are unsustainable from both health and environmental points of view. According to a 2019 study, consumption of whole-grain cereals, fruit and vegetables, legumes and nuts is insufficient, however, average intakes of energy, red meat, sugars, salt and fats continue to exceed recommendations.
