This report acknowledges the need to reduce food loss and waste, presents new insights on what is known and what is not, and provides guidance on how to target interventions and policies depending on policymakers’ objectives and the information available.
FAO estimates that around 14% of the world’s food is lost from post-harvest up to (but not including) the retail level. “Central Asia and Southern Asia” is the region with higher percentage of food loss, followed by “Northern America and Europe”. In terms of food categories, the category of “roots, tuber and Oil-bearing Crops” have the higher losses, followed by “Fruits and Vegetables”.
