A total of 27 healthy individuals were included in the study. The intervention consisted of an intake of 33 g of walnuts per day for three days. Antioxidants and other bioactive compounds were quantified. Also, urine and fecal samples were collected. Urolithins were identified in urine samples after the 3-day nut intervention.

The study results showed that walnut consumption for three days may be enough to modulate gut microbial composition and to increase the production of short-chain fatty acids.
