El Niño Weakens Monsoon Conditions in Parts of India

July 16, 2026

India is facing weaker monsoon conditions linked to the El Niño weather pattern, with authorities in Andhra Pradesh warning of increasing risks for agricultural activity as rainfall remains below normal levels, according to the Hans India. Delayed rainfall has slowed sowing operations across several districts and has increased pressure on rain-fed crops. Crops identified as vulnerable to prolonged dry spells include peanuts, cotton, maize, pulses and paddy.

Rainfall remained well below expected levels during June and large areas of cultivated land could be affected if dry conditions persist. Officials highlighted concerns over delayed planting, moisture stress in crops and declining water availability in some areas. Andhra Pradesh authorities identified several high-risk agricultural zones, particularly in regions that depend heavily on monsoon rainfall.

The report comes as market participants continue to monitor the development of El Niño and its potential influence on agricultural production in parts of Asia.
