Nutrien, a leading global fertilizer producer, has indefinitely shut down its nitrogen operations at the Point Lisas facility in Trinidad and Tobago. The company cited ongoing natural gas supply constraints and uncertainty. The plant had been idle since October 2025, when Nutrien halted production because of port access restrictions and the lack of reliable, economic gas supply. Trinidad has long been a major source of ammonia and urea for North and Latin American markets.
The closure comes as fertilizer prices continue to rise ahead of the Northern Hemisphere’s winter buying season. According to DTN’s survey of US agricultural retailers, all eight major fertilizer nutrients it tracks now cost more than a year ago. Urea is 12% higher year on year, and potash has risen above US$500 per ton for the first time since August 2024.
