EU Bromide MRL in Brazil Nuts: Call for Feedback

October 29, 2026

The EU’s maximum residue level (MRL) for bromide in Amazonia (Brazil) nuts is currently set at 50 mg/kg. There are industry concerns that the established limit may be too low, as the natural occurrence of bromide in the soil and/or water in the Amazon rainforest could contribute to bromide levels in Brazil nuts exceeding the permitted threshold.

In its scientific opinion, published in 2025, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) identified bromide levels exceeding the current limit in 38% of the Brazil nut samples analyzed and indicated that further data are needed. The collection of additional data could lead to a revision of the limit in the future.

INC members are invited to share any feedback, views or concerns they may have regarding this MRL by completing this form. Your feedback will help us assess the potential implications for the industry and determine whether any further action or dialogue with the relevant authorities may be warranted.
