EU Proposes Substantial Reduction of Sulfur Dioxide MLs for Dried Fruits

September 24, 2026

The European Commission has circulated a draft legal proposal concerning the conditions of use and maximum levels (MLs) for sulfur dioxide/sulfites (E 220-228). The proposal would significantly reduce MLs in several dried fruit categories, including dried apricots (from 2,000 to 1,000 mg/kg) and golden raisins (to 800 mg/kg). For dried figs, the existing 2,000 mg/kg would be removed without a replacement ML.

The INC has been invited by the European Commission to participate in a targeted stakeholder consultation on this proposal. INC members are welcome to contact us with their comments and input on this issue until September 30, 2026.
