Ghana’s Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) is seeking stronger cooperation with the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) to expand research and innovation for key tree crops, particularly cashew and shea. According to GBC Ghana, a TCDA delegation visited CRIG at Tafo in the Eastern Region to review the institute’s research activities and identify areas for closer collaboration across the value chain, from seedling production to value addition.
CRIG presented progress in cashew research, including work to develop varieties that are more tolerant or resistant to disease. Powdery mildew was highlighted as a growing threat to cashew production, with both institutions discussing the need for research-based solutions to protect productivity and improve the resilience of growers and the wider industry. The discussions also stressed farmer education and awareness to support the adoption of improved varieties, technologies and production practices.
The two institutions also identified opportunities for cooperation in capacity building, improved planting materials and value addition. During the visit, the TCDA delegation reviewed CRIG’s nursery operations and cashew seedling grafting activities.
