An Indian climate-tech project is turning cashew waste into renewable products, including marine biofuel. As reported by the Economic Times, Indo-Danish startup MASH Makes uses pyrolysis to convert cashew press cakes into bio-oil, biochar and syngas. The raw bio-oil is subsequently processed to produce a more stable, non-corrosive fuel that can be blended with conventional marine fuels, including very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) and marine gas oil (MGO). The refined bio-oil has undergone laboratory testing and real-world trials aboard commercial shipping vessels, providing a potential application for cashew-processing residues in the marine-fuel sector. The resulting biochar is used in agriculture to improve soil quality and retain moisture, with the company also reporting benefits for crop yields and carbon-credit generation.
