EU: Implementation of Deforestation Regulation to Be Delayed Another Year
The European Commission intends to postpone the launch its anti-deforestation law for another year, marking the second such delay, according to Reuters. On September 23, 2025, the EU’s Environment Commissioner told reporters that the postponement was necessary to address concerns about the readiness of information-technology systems needed to support the law.
Italy: 3D Imaging Sheds New Light on Hazelnut Development
A recent study has applied X-ray micro-computed tomography to map hazelnut fruit development in unprecedented detail. Researchers scanned buds from the popular Tonda di Giffoni cultivar from flowering through early fruit formation, creating three-dimensional reconstructions of flowers, ovaries, ovules, and embryos.
This non-destructive approach allows precise tracking of ovule development, early detection of abortive ovules, and accurate measurement of reproductive structures, offering advantages over traditional two-dimensional methods. By accurately capturing growth patterns and embryo formation stages, this technique could help producers select high-yielding, high-quality cultivars and better respond to climate challenges.
