The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) Board agreed on September 16, 2026, to move forward with the design of reforms under its Future of Food Regulation program. The proposals are intended to strengthen local enforcement while introducing a more consistent national approach to the oversight of the largest food businesses.
The planned model includes improved food-business registration, greater use of supply-chain data and intelligence, clearer guidance, stronger enforcement tools and national scrutiny of a small number of very large businesses. The FSA noted that more than 97% of food sold in shops is supplied through ten national retailers with extensive global supply chains.
The proposals are still at the design stage. The FSA expects to return to its Board with developed proposals in March 2027, followed by a public consultation later in 2027.
