This October 6, the INC Executive Committee met in Luxembourg to discuss the next steps of the INC’s strategic plan and define a concrete plan of actions taking into consideration the most important priorities for the INC going forward. The INC published the latest edition of one of its most eagerly anticipated statistical reports: the Nut and Dried Fruit Trade Map series. INC Attends Discussions with European Commission Officials

On October 6, 2023, the INC participated in an event featuring officials from the European Commission’s DG for Health and Food Safety and DG for the Environment. Türkiye Announces Tariff Increase on Almonds and Walnuts
The rate hikes will come into effect on November 1, 2023
On October 16, 2023, a Presidential decision published in the Official Gazette of Türkiye raised the tariff rate on walnuts and almonds, effective as of November 1, 2023. The customs duty rate for almond and walnut imports into Türkiye from all sources except for the United Arab Emirates will increase to 15% (up from 2% for almonds and 4% for walnuts). In recent years, the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) has become an increasingly vexing problem for hazelnut growers. This pest causes different kinds of damage —kernel abortion, early fall, cimiciato, etc.— at different stages of fruit development. In a recent study published in Horticulturae, Italian researchers set out to gain a better understanding of the interaction between the phenological development of hazelnuts and the brown marmorated stink bug. Greater Nut Consumption Could Significantly Reduce Healthcare Costs
AU$980 million could be saved annually if every Australian were to eat a handful of nuts daily
A new study commissioned by Nuts for Life has found that greater nut consumption could deliver major healthcare cost savings. The study, conducted by KPMG, found that healthcare expenditure could be reduced by AU$980 million each year if every Australian were to eat a 30 g handful of nuts daily. Of this figure, the potential savings associated with cardiovascular disease —one of the leading causes of death in Australia— amounts to AU$281 million. [Read more]
Peanut Intake Enhances Production of Metabolites Related to Memory and Mood
Consuming peanuts or peanut butter may contribute to the production of metabolites involved in cognition and stress response
In a recent study published in the Journal of Functional Foods, researchers set out to assess the impact of peanut consumption on the gut–brain axis. Specifically, this randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the association of urinary microbial phenolic metabolites (MPMs) related to peanut intake with memory function and stress response. A total of 63 healthy young adults completed the intervention. Participants consumed 25 g of skin-roasted peanuts, 32 g of peanut butter or 32 g of a control butter daily for six months. [Read more]
Early Intervention Curbs Peanut Allergies In Babies
Starting peanut oral immunotherapy during infancy can improve a child’s immune response over time
In a new study published in the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology: In Practice, children aged 7 to 11 months developed tolerance by eating tiny amounts of peanuts in a step-by-step, controlled process. For this retrospective study, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic reviewed data from 22 infants who received peanut oral immunotherapy at the clinic’s Food Allergy Center of Excellence. The babies were started on a daily dose of 18 mg of peanut protein in the form of peanut butter or peanut powder. [Read more]
